My favourite Chinese BBQ restaurant in Melbourne is called ‘Rose Garden’. It is located on Elizabeth st in the city. It’s a small restaurant run by a family. I believe the father is the chef and the mother and their daughters run the restaurant. The restaurant is always packed with students and also working people. The family is friendly, the service is excellent and always a thumb up for the food.  I reckon they serve the best roast pork in town!! No kidding…!

One of my favourite dishes from there is spicy chicken ribs. The chicken ribs are battered and then deep fried, and then cooked with spicy seasoning. Tonight was my first attempt to replicate the dish 😀

Spicy chicken ribs

(serves 2-3)

  • 500 gr chicken ribs
  • ½ cup corn flour
  • ½ cup plain flour
  • oil to fry the chicken. I used olive oil
  • 5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 5 red chillies, thinly sliced
  • salt pepper
  • ½ teaspoon five spice
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika powder
  • iceberg lettuce

Step 1. Season chicken ribs with salt and pepper. Set aside. Combine corn and plain flour and mix well.

Step 2. Heat oil in a wok over medium heat. I used about 5 tablespoons of oil per batch. Coat chicken ribs with flour, shake the excess flour and fry them in batches. Do not overcrowd the wok. Fry for about 5 minutes on one side and then turn and cook for a further 2 minutes until golden brown. Put the cooked chicken on paper towel to absorb excess oil. Deep fryer can be used instead of wok.

Step 3.  After all the chicken ribs have been fried, clean the wok and heat up about 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add chopped garlic and sliced chillies, cook for about 2 minutes until fragrant and the garlic is light brown.

Step 4. Add the cooked chicken into the wok, season with salt and pepper, add the paprika and five spice. Mix well.

Step 5. Put the chicken on a bed of shredded lettuce and enjoy with steamed rice and some greens.

The result: so NOT FAILED… Very happy with it, definitely will make them again.
